*Please note that sales experience is essential for this role and only suitable candidates will be successful.
I love when people say they work smart, so they don’t need to work hard…Sure, I get that…But who do you think is going to win in this scenario? Everyone’s looking for the same 100 clients in their community, but one fitness business owner spends 8 hours a day working and the other spends 2 hours a day.(Let’s assume both are working “smart” because they’ve spent the time reading and studying what they need to know to succeed.)
You only need two things to become successful…
1. Attitude & Hustle
I had no mentor and was as un-business savvy as you could get when I first opened my studio. I made every mistake and it cost me a lot of time, money, and stress.
But, I made it work anyway because I was willing to outwork my competition and I flat out refused to fail. It was the only thing I had going for me…
Looking back, though, it would have been nice to have this much sooner!
2. A Plan
If you don’t have a plan then all your hustle may be misdirected. You think you should be on Facebook or social media, when that’s the last thing you need to be doing.
Having a plan is the working “smart” part of the equation.
It’s the reason why it took me 5 years to build a multiple 6 Figure studio the first time, but now it only takes 12 months.
The work ethic hasn’t changed (but I do work LESS in the business).
What’s changed is I know exactly what to do, when to do it, and what to spend my time and money on.
And now it works like clockwork every time.
So here’s the thing…
If you aren’t willing to work and hustle for 12 months to build the fitness business of your dreams, then I can’t help you.
We don’t share the same vision.
But, if you’ll give me 12 months of focused hustle working “smart” and hard, I believe you’ll look back in a year from now with those past 12 months being some of the most fun and of massive growth you’ve ever experienced.
And of course, you’ll finally have the rewards (making more money and enjoying your work) you’ve been looking for.
In my opinion, adding 100K in 12 months to your fitness business is worth it…
PS. Don’t ever fall for the hype that if you just get your hands on the next funnel, Facebook tactic, or whatever magic bullet is being promoted this week that you’ll finally have the secret you’ve been looking for…
It’s all a lie.
I’ve seen everything and invested in most of those products…
What you need is proven plan combined with a All-Star quality work ethic. If you have these two things you have no competition. See my webpage www.fitbizhub.com.au for all the Studio documents you need, and keep an eye out for Studio In A Box – the ultimate Studio Solution due out in September 2016!
This is a unique opportunity to work up to 25-35 hours of contact mobile Personal Training a week with the scope of workplace health hours along with many other unique avenues for growth and development. Note that we are the only Personal Training business in Melbourne that strictly employs only fully qualified University degree qualified trainers – as such we stand well above the rest of the PT and fitness industry.
I have purposefully made a lengthy 12 minute video that will encompass all that I am about and I initially made this for my first full-time trainer so rather than make a new one (as much of it focuses on ‘my first’ PT – the sentiment is still the same for the next PT to gain this position – Click here for a full background on myself, my expectations and requirements.
Please note that if you are not prepared to watch the video in its entirety and you don’t have an initial affinity, excitement or share the same passion, please don’t apply. On last advert I had many outstanding applicants and remember that I only need 1 person that meets what I am looking for – so if you are not going to stand out from the rest, then this is not the job for you. I will say that the key is your passion, initiative, integrity and desire to work hard for a career and not ‘just another job’ – if you lack these traits, simply save yourself the trouble.
I started Just In Time Personal Training in October 2012 and as I approach 4 years after starting on my own for the first 15-18 months, I now have five devoted fellow University degree qualified trainers working with me and thriving. So you will be joining a fantastic team.
The Role:
Must have completed a 3-4 year Tertiary/University Degree in an Exercise or Sports Science related course (Not a certificate 3 or 4 course).
Must have had 2+ years’ experience in a full-time or part-time capacity
Must be passionate about helping people improve their whole health, fitness and well-being – not just hard workouts!
This is a unique opportunity to work under one of Melbourne’s better and longest serving Personal Trainers who will help you not only develop and be the best PT that you can be but is actually intent on helping you grow as a person, future manager at Just In Time and/or helping you develop your own business in the future.
I previously worked as a Personal Training Operations Manager of a well-established nation-wide workplace health and PT company for 15 years whereby I was in charge of all PT staff interviewing (hiring), training, development and firing. I have the most vigorous interview process that I am aware of in Melbourne and now as my very own business and my name and brand at stake, this is now even more thorough. I hope that this will scare away those not up to the challenge and for those keen to impress and have the confidence and ability to be enthused to join my team at a very exciting time and period of rapid growth..
The exciting role will entail much apartment gym clientele in and around the CBD and Southbank (between 50-80%) and travelling to other clients less than 20kms (<25min) from the CBD. The beauty of this is that you can work your own hours and set your own schedule and be paid at the highest rate in Melbourne that I am aware of with no rental requirement or established clientele necessary. You will be provided with all equipment to take to your clients (a home-kit valued at over $1500).
Essential:
You must be an Australian resident and possess and Australian Citizenship as I am searching for someone to take up this role for 3-5 years+ and a keenness to develop under my guidance.
You must have your own car and Australian driver’s license and employment will be conditional on you not losing your license in your tenure. The main gist of this role is that you will be providing a ‘mobile’ Personal Training service with no fixed address or studio.
You must have passion for training each and every client with their best interests at heart and be solely focussed on exceeding their needs and expectations with an emphasis on:
lifestyle balance
long-term behaviour change
health, posture, fitness, well-being and an overall holistic approach.
If you have a bootcamp or CrossFit approach or background – please do not apply as that is as far from ‘personal’ as you can be.
I have no immediate urgency to rush this decision and work would commence as of mid-late September, 2016 and will start with 5-10 hours and build as you develop and the business continues to grow and expand rapidly as it is.
If this excites you and you would like to get more of a background on myself please check out the video.
Also, have an extensive look over my website and if you think that this position is for you, let’s chat and send me your resume as a first port of call!
Please feel free to apply at any time over the coming years as I am always keen to add the right people to our team.

Monday this week saw the voting open for positions on the Fitness Australia Board. Yep that’s right there is an election!
I remember for years various State associations and in the early days of Fitness Australia there were no elections. In fact, often we had to beg, cajole, and even drag some people kicking and screaming to the Board.
What an exciting position the Australian fitness industry finds itself in now – 12 people offering to volunteer to be on the peak body.
Most importantly, what an exciting position the fitness industry finds itself in!
As a Fitness Australia Business Member you can determine the future of our industry by voting for whom you think will represent the industry best at Board level.
As a former Board member I want to share what really happens at those Board meetings:
If you have a hidden agenda, your fellow Board members will see it and it won’t be hidden for long;
If you are representing an industry category, you have the opportunity to speak on behalf of that category but you have to make a decision that is best for the industry as a whole;
If you are not prepared for a meeting, you will have no input or uneducated input and that doesn’t help anyone; and
If you disagree with a Board decision, that is fine within the Boardroom but once you leave the Boardroom you have to be united & unwavering in the decision, otherwise you splinter the industry you were voted to lead.
These are just my opinions of what happens but after sitting on fitness industry, charitable and rugby boards for nearly 20 years I think I am qualified to have an opinion.
The people running for the Board positions I am sure understand their responsibilities. I am sure they understand the machinations of a Board. And I am sure they are running to better the industry. They are quality candidates.
What I hope is that those who are eligible to vote, understand this is not a popularity contest. Fitness Australia is not seeking the most popular person in the fitness industry on their Board.
If you can vote, consider:
Reading carefully every nominee’s campaign ‘promise’;
Looking beyond what they are currently doing and look at what they have done and the successes they have had in business and/or on other Boards;
Picking up the phone and calling the nominee(s) and talking to them about why you should vote for them; and
Putting your personal opinions on an individual away (ie whether you may or may not ‘like’ that person) and acknowledge and respect them for what they have achieved.
I have no idea what Fitness Australia are seeking as a skill set or traits for the Board members. If I could vote, then my 3 criteria would be:
Thinkers – people with business acumen and are deep thinkers who can see the long term impact of any short term decisions;
Doers – people who will get in, roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty;
Galvanisers – people who will work to unite the industry so that we can grow the industry.
You will have your own criteria for which you wish to vote for. Just remember EVERY vote counts and YOUR vote will decide the future of the industry.
Pokemon Go is by far the biggest example of gamification, which means you apply game psychology and mechanics to non-game situations like in this case walking and running.
In the rare case that you may not know what Pokemon Go is all about, it is an augmented reality game played on your smart phone. The purpose of the game is to catch Pokemon creatures, some more unique and rare than others. In order to catch them players are encouraged to walk and each time a Pokemon is near they will be notified on the phone. The camera function is then activated and the Pokemon arrives in your real environment captured by your camera and places the imaginary creature in it. To catch it, the key is to throw Pokeballs to it, when you catch the creature successfully it is entered into your Pokedex, think of it as a collection book you can show to all who want to know.
If you want to gain additional terminology fast, the best place to check is the Pokemon Go website. In the meantime, I would already recommend to download it onto your smartphone, so you have first person experience when you delve into the resource I am sharing. It is free to play. The resource I share on the Active Management Member’s Hub will give ideas on how to make it work for your fitness business.
The strength of the game is that it taps in childhood memories of those born in the 80’s and 90’s, a memory especially a nostalgic nice one of playing a favourite game is what a lot of us want to re-kindle at any given opportunity. The other motivators that are attracting players of all ages to join in to play are the curiosity factor because it is a new trend, encouragement in the game with early wins and potentially encouragement from people they know to join in. What keeps people playing is the element of surprise, because you never know where a Pokemon is going to pop-up next.
From a fitness business perspective, you could see this as immediate competition or you could join in with the fun. The great thing is that all ages are getting out and they are engaging in exercise, which I guess is what most fitness businesses are also wanting to achieve.
The creators of the game are also open about the fact that they will be adding the opportunity to sponsor a Pokestop (a place where you can gain ammunition) and Pokegyms (battle grounds where teams meet to win more power and to battle for ownership). Currently this function is not yet available, but it will be coming out in the near future. If you are making the choice to opt in to the fun and create Poke-real events in your area, then this could be a good way to draw attention.
In the resource I share on the Active Management Member’s Hub I will share how the motivational psychology works and how that can be applied to other fitness plans you run. I will explain how to join in with the Pokemon Go craze and to organise structured business building events around it.
An will be running our very first ‘Virtual Roundtable’ on the Member Hub from 5th August to the 15th August. This is your chance to ask An’s advice and ask any questions relating to Gamification in your business.
Most every company’s dream is to make a product beyond compare. Yet finding the formula isn’t always so easy. A hand-picked crew of 40-plus sales and marketing experts, designers, and engineers, well, that definitely helps.
To take an industry that is often seen as niche, and create a concept that the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker brandishes as impressive for its “customization of products for export markets,” truly takes thinking out of the box.
“What I focused on was advancement through innovation…honing in on the customer to really create a competitive edge,” says John Young, former SVP International Sales for Cybex, the health-and-fitness sector’s fifth-placed company.
In his role, Young embraced the idea of reaching for the highest level of customization possible, raising the global offer beyond other industry giants that surpass in turnover. “A customer centric sales approach and listening to the customer needs,” was, and still is, Young’s motto.
A mere 123 companies were recognized this year for the 54th annual award that was revived by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. Kennedy’s executive order to resurrect the World War II “E” symbol of excellence is a full-out salute to America’s “for their outstanding work to reduce barriers to foreign markets and to open the door to more trade around the world,” Secretary Pritzker said at the May awards ceremony in Washington D.C.
Cybex International has demonstrated a sustained commitment to export expansion,” Prtizker said in a congratulatory letter toCybex. The award is the highest recognition a U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of American exports.
In 2015, U.S. exports totaled $2.23 trillion, accounting for nearly 13 percent of U.S. GDP. Nationally, exports contributed to the U.S. economy, supporting an estimated 11.5 million jobs.
U.S. companies are nominated for the “E” Awards through the Department of Commerce’s U.S. Commercial Service office network, located within the Department’s International Trade Administration, with offices in 108 U.S. cities and more than 70 countries. Winners are selected for years of successive export growth and a demonstration innovative international marketing leading to increased exports.

Special Shout Out…
A HUGE shout out to the Anytime Fitness Community in the US. Last weekend Tina Hines lost her battle with cancer. Even though Anytime is a massive company, Tina’s story has touched every person involved with Anytime. So to Bobby Hines and Tina’s family this is for you . . . #TeamTinaTough
What I have been doing this week . . .
I want to start with a story . . .
This week while training in a gym, I arrived as a brand new member arrived and started her first ever PT session near where I was working out. I could hear everything and see everything going on between this new member and the personal trainer.
My first observation, the PT took NO notes during the conversation. She recorded nothing!!! Just asked questions and nodded.
The PT asked almost ALL the right questions – what was her exercise history, any medical conditions, etc. but she did miss the most obvious: what are your goals.
I heard the lady say, “I have never been to a gym before. So I am a little nervous.” And the response, “You’ll be right. I’ll show you some exercises today.”
As I trained over the next hour our paths crossed and I watched and where possible listened. From my observations, there was no real order to the workout. The member was walked all over the gym and I mean walked, the trainer 2 to 3 feet in front of the member at all times.
I guess she was trained in body parts but she covered miles in the gym. Walking from one end to the other. I have no idea how this new member and new person to exercise would remember what to do and where to go.
We stood next each other at the assisted chin dip machine and I swear the PT said “Have you seen this machine before?” Remember this lady had never been to a gym before!!! OMG
She then demonstrated an exercise wonderfully and her cueing to have the lady do the exercise was great. In the 5 minutes we were there, the trainer smiled and tried hard to make the client feel at ease. But never used her name once!
At the end of the session, she said goodbye to the client – no use of name again. And in the workout nothing was written down and nothing given to the client.
With these experiences occurring in many gyms across the globe every day, is it any wonder that we have retention issues when trainers, who are the face of our business, are treating new clients or gym members like this.
What I have been reading…
This week, I read a great article on “Winning our Lost Customer Back.” This article is the results of study by V Kumar that was published in the Journal of Marketing in July last year on 53,000 former telco customers. They determined that these customers are like customers of any business that does periodic billing and high churn rates – e.g. gyms!
The study stated we maybe better to spend more energy trying to get old customers than get new ones, for 3 simple reasons:
They have shown a need for your product, making them better prospects than cold leads;
They know you, so no need to build brand awareness & what you do;
With the use of technology, you can craft specific win back strategies that are more personalised.
The main people to focus on to win back are those who have:
Referred others;
Never complained or
Had their complaints resolved satisfactorily.
The study also showed that those who had left and returned generally stayed longer than their first stay. And people who left owing to price, stayed the longest on their second stint!
And your offer:
Service upgrade has the lowest response rate but generally the cheapest strategy, so the highest return;
A bundled offer of a discount & service upgrade had the highest success rate but was the highest cost and lowest return.

Active Management Ninjas…
This week we finalised our first 6 ninjas for Active Management Members. These are world experts in their fields, like Dr Michelle Segar and An Coppens, and will be running virtual Q & A sessions for our members. This is super exciting as there is nothing like this happening for fitness business owners on the planet!
This Week…
I have to admit I haven’t been listening to any podcasts in the past 2 weeks, as my cardio has dropped off in the gym. I expect this to start again in the next 2 weeks, so get ready for some podcast thoughts!
This coming week, I am finalising the agenda for the Personal Trainers Industry Leaders Roundtable meeting and putting the final touches on a new presentation called Likeability: The key to sales, retention & business growth!
Quote of The Week…
‘Handwriting notes will help you recall what you heard. It will also show your customer they have your focus and you care.’

Last Saturday on my way home from Auckland I watched the movie Eddie the Eagle and what an amazing story. Spoiler alert if you don’t know the story, he doesn’t win a medal but he proves everybody wrong.
Even his own dad said he’d never get to the Olympics. He faced ongoing opposition from the British Olympic Committee which didn’t deter him.
And my confession, I was blubbering at the end!! It must have been the altitude! Right?
It’s a great story of someone doing what everyone says you can’t through pure determination, focus and not listening to the naysayers! Well worth a watch.
In just a couple of weeks I start FitnessBiz Brunch in Australia. I visit every capital city and will be delivering 4 brand new presentations to strengthen your business. The sessions are on:
7 Consumer trends that impact fitness businesses
How to have people like you, so they buy from you
Using customer service as marketing and lead generating tool
Around the world in 60 minutes, looking at gyms, studios and fitness business models
This week I’ve been planning our FitnessBiz Brunch marketing, so where did I start?
I started with my message. Whatever medium you are using to market your business – emails, flyers, online or offline ads – your message must show a solution to the pain of your customer.
I can honestly say I spent hours trying to get the copy just right for our advertising pieces. It was hard work! I think I’m about 80% there and we still need to refine the message after a few test emails. This has already taken me 20+ hours to get to this point.
How long do you spend on writing copy for your sales emails? Or direct mail piece?
Here’s 2 big hints for a successful marketing piece …
You have to know the pain points of your customers when writing your copy!
70% of your energy, copy, space must be spent on providing proof you can solve your customers problems.
As Jay Baer says … It’s about help not hype!
I read a great article in INC Magazine on Robert Herjevac, one of the stars on the US Shark Tank. Read the whole article here.
There were two things he said that stood out for me . . .
Success in business is about being yourself and having the confidence and respect in yourself to push. Success has no shape, no colour, no height. You can be yourself with underlying inner strength – that is in all of us!
He used to think that if you provide a great product or service, customers will JUST find you. You have to tell the world that you exist!
Love to answer any questions you have about business, management, leadership or even life – I’ll make the answer up if I don’t know it! Just comment below or use the hash tag #AskJT!
