    Focus On Your People | This Will Help

    If you care about your people, this tool will show you do care!

    As the Chair of 7 REX Roundtables in both Australia and the US, a common agenda item is ‘Getting The Most From Your Team.’  And is there any topic more important?

    Seriously, in 2023 your people will be your most important asset.  They are the ones that will make sales, improve retention, live the company culture and be the integral part of driving your business to profit.

    As that is the case, then it’s critical we show them we care about them as a person – not just an employee or team member.  We want to know how they felt about their development in 2022 and more importantly what are they thinking about for 2023.

    Thanks to REX Roundtables for putting together what they are calling ‘2022 Reflections & 2023 Actions.’  This is a form you can give to your team to complete – it will take some time for honest completion.  Then you can organise a cup of coffee and a 30 minute chat with them to discuss their answers.

    The ‘2022 Reflections & 2023 Actions’ can be download here.

    Completing the form by your team will benefit them personally.

    Talking through their completed form with you will benefit them personally and the business.  It will be a great time investment for you where you will see a return over the ensuing 12 months.

  • Being a fitness business owner is f***ing lonely!

    Being a fitness business owner is f***ing lonely!

    Last week I offered free chats with owners and managers of fitness businesses in Victoria, Australia as they entered the half way point in their second COVID-19 lock down. There were 3 common trends from my calls:

    People are on an emotional roller coaster both weekly and even within a day;

    A strong desire to speak with people who have already gone through what they were going through; and

    It is super lonely.

    As a former gym manager and gym owner, I concur that even in the best of times running a business is a roller coaster, hearing best business practices and ideas are essential, and it is lonely.

    Perhaps the best kept secret in the fitness industry is REX Roundtables. Your personal roundtable of non-competing fellow owners support and empathise with your emotions, share best practices and ensure you are never lonely!

    During COVID like many business and leadership development programs we have moved to Zoom: twenty three weekly catch ups and counting! Of course we’ll return to face to face when we can but in the meantime our desire is to help every REX Roundtable member get through this crisis unscathed.

    However, unlike many business and leadership development programs, REX Roundtables follows no curriculum or ‘tick a box’ learnings. It is dynamic and fluid adjusting to your business needs every week. Your roundtable helps you based on the practical state of your business not the theoretical state. This is just one major difference!

    I’m sure you’ll agree that your prospects find the hardest part of starting an exercise program is actually starting – walking into the gym for the first time or asking for help or even just picking up the phone to enquire. Once they do and then experience your amazing facility and services they wonder why they waited so long to change their life.

    Joining a REX Roundtable is the same. The hardest part is making the first decision of starting or asking for help or sending an email for more information or just identifying you want something extra from your business for your personal life and then plotting the strategy to get it.

    With REX Roundtables in Australia, Europe and the US there is a group for you, so don’t be lonely any longer . . . don’t guess a strategy . . . don’t meander in business . . . and don’t think ‘what if.’ Check out www.REXRoundtables.com or email me now and we’ll find a Roundtable for you.

    Don’t Take My Word For It

    Last month The Fitness Business Podcast interviewed the President and several REX Roundtable members and you will be impressed, amazed and emotionally moved at what REX Roundtables have done for not just the business but the people involved.

  • What’s been tougher for you . . .

    What’s been tougher for you . . .

    What’s been tougher from March 23rd until now:

    1. Business in general?
    2. Finding someone who understands your situation?
    3. Loneliness as an owner?
    4. Staying focussed when curveballs are coming daily?
    5. Coming out of the blocks with focus, energy and clarity this month?

    These are the top FIVE challenges I have heard in the weekly Zoom calls with my Roundtable members since March.  Having a trusted group of peers have made the past 90 days a little more bearable for these lucky business owners.

    However, these independent business owners were not just “lucky.”  They had chosen to be part of the longest operating Roundtable program.  They have worked hard and most importantly worked with direction, strategy and knowledge of industry data and trends to ensure their first move is the best for the business and them personally.

    As Rick Upton, Owner of Loggerhead Fitness said about his weekly Zoom Roundtable meetings

    “It is nice to talk with other business owners that speak my business language.”

    You can now join one of the Roundtables that I run in Australia or the US – in fact over the past 14 weeks we have formed 2 brand new REX Roundtables in the US that are almost full – that’s over 32 business owners who wanted support and knowledge during the most trying time in the history of business.

    As Jeff Sanders said,

    “If I had to choose between my REX Roundtable and a marketing budget, I would choose REX every time.  The ROI I have seen since joining makes this the best decision I’ve ever made.”

    And Jeff joined REX Roundtables in the first few weeks of shutdown.

    The experts say that as we reopen we need to adjust to the ‘new’ normal.  Your ‘new’ normal must include being part of a Roundtable because as Matt Fletcher, owner of GOPT says,

    “We work together to move our businesses forward. We work together to be better leaders.”

     Make REX Roundtables in Australia or the US part of your ‘new’ normal, drop me a note now and we can have a chat.

    Please note: For fitness business owners in NSW, Australia you can join the NSW Roundtable for lunch on July 3rd.  This is our first face to face catch-up post-COVID and pre-empts our full day Roundtable meetings on September 11th and November 27thEmail me to see if you qualify for an invite to lunch.

  • Gym Chain Owners Lead With Investing In Leaders

    Gym Chain Owners Lead With Investing In Leaders

    You’ve heard me say this in #JTInTheRaw show 74, if you give a s*#t about your staff then give a s*#t about them.  Last week, I saw owners care about their team beyond the numbers. They cared about them as people.

    Life & Soul have 4 clubs in north Western Australia – about 1200km apart. Bolted on to 3 of their box clubs are their own F45s. The owners, Cindy and Pete, are assisted by Tom, the regional manager, and a team of club and department managers who love their jobs and their clubs.

    Last week I had the amazing opportunity to work with them on developing their leadership skills. We covered:

    • Habits to make them personally high achievers;
    • Setting personal goals to achieve more and set examples for their teams;
    • Managing their businesses by numbers and implications of every action on a business number;
    • The importance of social media in the club’s positioning in the community and their role in that strategy; and
    • How to develop a strong, successful challenge.

    Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the meeting for me was when we spontaneously went on a tangent and had some of the leaders give presentations that I gave feedback on.

    It was right then that it dawned on me how powerful the art of public speaking is in the leadership equation.  When you can command a room or a group with how you speak, rather than what you speak, you become a leader at a deeper level.

    Congrats to the team as they took on the feedback and I know they will be leading their staff meetings with more conviction and confidence!

    Finally, Cindy and Pete exemplify ownership leadership. They are outstanding examples of empowering and delegating. They are allowing their leaders to flourish and fail, so they learn.  They are providing their team unique opportunities to help them get better.  They are tailoring their own conference to the business needs.

    I love IHRSA.  I love Filex.  I love big industry conferences.  They rock!!

    But I can see how running a 2 to 3 day internal conference truly benefits your culture, leadership development and trust amongst the team. The tailored messaging strengthens the brand and the individuals.  This is definitely worth including in your 2018 budget.

    Thanks Cindy, Pete, Tom and all the Team from Life & Soul and F45 for allowing me to work with you.
