#Filex2014 Wrap: Learning Is Great AND Networking is Awesome

I have never missed Filex as a delegate or speaker, so that’s 20 years straight!

    Why?

Yes the education allows me to be aware of industry trends and I can up skill my knowledge as it is one of the best (if not the best) conferences in the world.

I get just as much a buzz from meeting people I Tweet with or have connected on Facebook or whom I haven’t seen in a year!

The faces in the crowd make the complete Filex event!

See if you recognize any faces in the crowd in our gallery – click here

So yep, I’ll be back next year!

#Filex2014 Wrap: Day 3 And In A Blink It Was All Over!

More winners started the day with the amazing Nardia Norman announced as Personal Trainer of the Year and Paul Brown the Presenter of the Year.  People don’t do what they do for awards. But recognition from your peers seriously rocks you to your personal core!

Well done Nards &  Browny . . . well deserved!

I had a marketing session after the closing and after lunch, so to be honest I expected very few to show up! But a full room learnt about marketing to the old brain – the part of the brain that makes decisions!

I had a such a blast with this group and think they found the session E & E: educational & entertaining.

We can see what they are trying to do but just think they have missed the mark big time – and we say big time as they had the opportunity to educate and then convert to members with quality information.

    Here are 3 samples:

The copy could have included how long they need to exercise to burn off the food.  It could have provided a range of exercise options to burn off the food. It could have done so much more . . .

#Filex2014 Wrap: Day 2 A Caged Lion Got Into Action!

After a day of being an attendee, I was itching to speak!

I started the day presenting at the Personal Trainers Breakfast with Matt O’Neill and Fiona Cosgrove.  This my first presentation EVER to a PT specific group and I didn’t hold back!  I challenged them to sharpen their business skills if they want to be in business beyond the average 9 months!

You can download my notes from this session here.

Then after lunch was my session on how to Manage A Successful Business.  This has been a permanent session on the Filex schedule for 10 years and this was the first year we went from a 6 hour session to a 3 hour session!

    Was I stressed?

You betcha! I had so much to say in a short period!

But we covered everything I wanted to – phew! And the real bonus for me, my room held 48 people and we had one stage 68 people! Yep they were hanging from the rafters!

If you would like a copy of my notes, click here.

Thanks to everyone that attended and to Amy from Australian Fitness Network for giving me the opportunity to #enhance people’s fitness businesses with my experiences and knowledge!

#Filex2014 Wrap: Day 1 Was All Winners!

The opening ceremony was as always high caliber!  I am sure everyone’s attention was grabbed with South American Samba ladies and dancing men before the formalities kicked in.

Mark Davis was his entertaining best as the MC.

There were amazing award winners, including the first posthumous award to Mark Rimmel from Bodycare Health Club in Albany, Western Australia.  Mark did many incredible things in his life and I am so pleased that an initial conversation with Network lead to this Inspirational Award.

The amazing Michelle Bridges inspired and motivated on behalf of the Australian Institute of Fitness.

Then Michael Port returned and shared a personal story and challenged everyone to ‘Think Big.’  His leaving line . . . “What do you stand for?”

Then the sessions began and everyone took off!

My highlight for the day was Rob Hale from Fitness First who spoke on retention.  It is industry knowledge that their retention sucked and Rob was the first to admit it.  In deed, the highlight for me was his candor and honesty around the Fitness First business.  He shared facts, figures and their strategy to keep working on their retention.

It was a refreshing session and my highlight of the sessions.

  • #Filex2014 Wrap: Wearable Technology at The Business Summit

#Filex2014 Wrap: Wearable Technology at The Business Summit

I had no idea that people would listen so attentively to me!  So thank you but I need to clarify something . . .

I indeed pointed out that with coming technology the future for strap on heart rate monitors is bleak and in fact nigh.  This doesn’t mean the technology is useless now or will end tomorrow.  It means that it is in the future.

I am 100% positive that those products that use strap on heart rate monitoring devices, will be evolving their products to keep up with the new technological advances.

So for the people who went to the MYZONE booth or spoke with Mike or MJ and said “JT said that you shouldn’t buy strap on devices,” I am sorry to correct you BUT . . . I didn’t say that.

And most importantly I will reiterate that I am 100% positive that MYZONE will be at the forefront of the advances as they become available!

    Anyway, I digress LOL!

I would like to emphasis that you can use and should use the wearable devices to compliment and support what you do in your fitness business.  There are cool ‘toys’ that your members will love to use if you build them into a program.

Don’t put your head in the sand, as that action leaves a part of your anatomy vulnerable!

You can download my notes on wearable technology here.

FYI – here is a video I didn’t have time to play in the summit of where devices are heading.

To keep abreast of all the cool technology advances, can I suggest you become a member of Active Management?  I share devices, websites, ideas and tools that will keep you up to date with this aspect of the industry.  It will be nice to be an early adopter as opposed to missing the boat!  Become a member online in 3 clicks – start here.

  • #Filex2014 Wrap: Michael Port my Fave at The Business Summit

#Filex2014 Wrap: Michael Port my Fave at The Business Summit

An extremely strong line up of business centric speakers for the 2014 Business Summit was on again.  This year Nigel Champion, the Managing Director of Network relieved me of my duties as the MC, which enabled me to sit back and enjoy the sessions.

If you follow me on Twitter (@JTActiveMgmt) or the #Filex2014 Twitter stream, you would have seen there were some powerful insights from Michael Port, Nils Vesk, Reece Zondag and David Patchell-Evans.

My personal fave was Michael Port and here are some key points:

    • Marketing creates awareness of what you do BUT what you do when they are aware of you makes the difference.
    • You must build deep trust for sales to be successful
    • If you don’t love talking about what you do, you will struggle to grow your business.
    • A great brand either pleases people or people dislike the brand. If you are in the middle you are nowhere. Have your brand stand for something!
    • Add in your reason why you do what you do (cue Simon Sinek: ‘Start With Why’) and you will attract customers.
    • When your brand is clear, then the horing process is easier.
    • To build credibility, you need to be likable. Here are the 4 steps to increasing your likability:
      • Be friendly
      • Be real and authentic
      • Show empathy
      • Be relevant
    • Replace marketing in the dictionary with relevancy
    • Stop sending general ‘stufff’ to clients and prospects. Technology allows you to be specific, which means you show relevancy to your customer!  This is my current soap box and I’ll explain more at FitnessBiz Brunches over the next few months – click here to find out when FitnessBiz Brunch hits your city.
    • Use price anchoring and framing to increase the yield from your customers.  I was super excited to hear him discuss this generally, as we discussed it at the Industry Leaders Roundtable 8 months ago – to find out about the Industry Leaders Roundtable click here.

Rather than tell you all about the night, I think the photos taken by Analee from Oh Magazine tell the story nicely!
