Gary Vaynerchuck Jab Jab Jab Right Hooks the Industry At #IHRSA2014 – Part 1

    Gary Vaynerchuck

One of the benefits of the IHRSA conference is the high caliber of key note speakers they have and day 3 was the energetic, challenging, and my personal social media guru: Gary Vaynerchuck.

And OMG . . . one of the BEST key notes I have ever heard!

Then I was lucky enough to spend another 90 minutes in a private, small group where Gary went deeper into his thoughts.

A real insight for me was when he said, “Quick results only come to companies with amazing/enormous value. Business is a marathon! So be prepared for the lots of effort.”

Over the next 3 days I’ll share his points and quotes on:

    Fitness marketing is dated
    Marketers have ruined the world
    Marketing Insights
    Social media thoughts
    Future thoughts
    Words of wisdom

    So lets get started . . .

    Fitness Marketing Is Dated

The fitness industry biggest marketing issue, from Gary’s perspective, is that we are living in 2014 but using marketing skills and tactics from 2004.  He said, we should look at our own behaviour to get marketing insights: e.g.:

    • Do you read all your direct mail?
    • Do you read bill boards on the side of the road?
    • Do you watch the commercials on TV?

So if you answered “No” to any of these questions, why are you marketing in that medium?

The word “sorry” is powerful and people listen!  If you can use that in your marketing and it is genuine people will value your apology.

In Gary’s business, he studies and then markets in a world that we will live in 18 months. Staying ahead of the curve.

Marketers have ruined the world including email!

Gary gave the example that 10 years ago we were excited to get emails. Now we are depressed with the ‘crap’ that lands in our inboxes.

We need to be REALLY careful on using direct email as a marketing tool because the power of the ‘Delete’ button.

  • Does A Zebra With Stripes Too Big For It Inspire You?

Does A Zebra With Stripes Too Big For It Inspire You?

So the last weeks we shared two subtle Gold’s Gym ads that focused on weight loss:

And this week here is another.

    17th March

We have to admit when we first saw this we were like “What the?”  We were trying to work out why a Zebra would be used to market a weight loss business.

It took several minutes – minutes you do not have when marketing or advertising your product – before we realised the stripes were too big.  The Zebra had lost the weight.

Out of 10, we would suggest this to be 8 or 9 for being clever but just too clever and would be surprised if it worked – ie brought in more customers.

  • Gold’s Gym Getting Used To A Skinnier Girlfriend

Gold’s Gym Getting Used To A Skinnier Girlfriend

Just like last week’s Bridal camp marketing piece (click here if you missed it) this is subtle. Nevertheless very clever.

    10th Mar

    See it?

My issue is it may take you two or three glances to get the image and what it means.  Unfortunately, when advertising we don’t have that much time.  And without a strong headline, I am not sure this advertising would work.

    Are we right or wrong?

Fitness Marketing Tips Old Brain – Part 7

Thanks for joining us and hearing about one of the 7 stimuli of the old brain or the part of the brain that will make the decision to buy from you.

The old brain is ONLY triggered by emotion. Emotions create electrochemical responses in our brains. These reactions directly impact the way process & remember information.

We have 100 billion neurons in the grey matter of our brains. When we experience emotions a cocktail of hormones flood our brains and this makes the connections between our neurons faster & stronger.

As result, we remember events better when we have experienced them with stronger emotions.

Check out other videos here about stimulating the old brain and if you would like us to work with you on using this information in your marketing plan and design, drop me an email or give me a yell.

Gold’s Gym Bridal Boot Camp Very Subtle

Look the image and you tell me if you see the ‘benefit’ to joining the Gold’s Gym Bridal Boot Camp?

    3rd March

    See it?

Subtle isn’t it. And I think perhaps too subtle. I love the concept and I do like how it is ‘not in your face weight loss’.  I am just not sure if at a quick glance you will see the benefit.

    What do you think?
