  • Are You Missing Out on Your Next Star Team Member?

Are You Missing Out on Your Next Star Team Member?

Have you walked into a shop, restaurant, or bar in the last 10 days and had great service?

    ✅ Awesome eye contact?
    ✅ A beaming smile?
✅ Did they use your name or remember your order?

If you said “yes” to any of these… why didn’t you offer them a job interview?

We’re missing hundreds of opportunities to headhunt quality, service-minded individuals because we’re too shy!

The first step to recruiting is knowing the values you want your team members to have. But it’s actually more than that.

You need to recognise the behaviours that match those values.

When you see someone demonstrating those behaviours—thrust a business card under their nose and tell them you’d love to chat about a role in your company!

In February, I visited an Vuori, and the manager was phenomenal.

    • Biggest smile.
    • Welcomed every shopper.
    • Nothing was too much trouble.

If I had a gym in San Diego, I’d have snapped her up—quick smart!

The labour market is tight for quality people, but when you know your values and matching behaviours, you can be recruiting every day. Don’t miss those opportunities!

    What’s Next?

✅ Reflect on the values and behaviours you want in your team.
✅ Start spotting potential hires in your everyday interactions.
✅ Never let a great candidate slip through the cracks again!

  • Gym Owners Are Wasting Hundreds of Dollars

Gym Owners Are Wasting Hundreds of Dollars

What I’m seeing right now is gym owners pouring money into lead generation campaigns… and getting nothing in return. 💸

    Here’s the raw truth:

👉 You don’t need more leads. You need more sales.
If the agency you’re paying can’t deliver actual paying members, don’t give them another cent.

    👉 Maybe your problem isn’t volume—it’s follow-up.
Back in October 2024, 500 gyms were mystery shopped by MysteryShoppingForFitnessBusinesses.com.au47% never responded to an inquiry. That’s not a lead problem—that’s a lead handling problem.

👉 Even if they get you 30 new sales a month, that’s 360 for the year. With an average attrition rate of 4% per month, you’ll lose 172 of them. You don’t just need sales—you need to work on attrition.

So many owners try to slap a Band-Aid on a gaping wound. But that won’t stop the bleeding.

🧠 If you really want to grow, understand your business inside-out:

    • Your conversion rates – enquiries to tours; show rates; tours to sales.

    • Your attrition percentage and retention months

    • Your yield per member

And then? Pull the right levers. That’s where growth lives. Not in some silver bullet from a self-proclaimed social media guru.

Want to stop flushing your money and start building a sustainable business? It starts by knowing your numbers better than anyone else.

Let’s be real. There’s no shortcut in business.

And if someone’s selling one—they’re not in it for the long haul.

  • Barrie Elvish’s Final Act Shines A Mayday Light On Homelessness

Barrie Elvish’s Final Act Shines A Mayday Light On Homelessness

In one of his final acts as CEO of AUSactive, Barrie Elvish is stepping out of the boardroom and onto the cold concrete as part of the 2025 Vinnies CEO Sleepout — raising vital funds and awareness for the more than 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness every night.

This powerful gesture is more than symbolic — it’s a call to action for the exercise and active health industry.

With a fundraising goal of $10,000, Barrie is inviting the health and wellbeing industry and broader community to unite behind a cause that aligns with the very heart of AUSactive’s mission: improving physical and mental wellbeing for all Australians.

“Our industry is about supporting people to live healthier, stronger lives — but how can someone focus on wellbeing if they don’t have a safe or warm place to sleep?” Barrie said.

“Join me in making one of my last initiatives one to remember, not for me, but for the 122,000+ people who don’t have a place to call home tonight.

“I challenge you to help make a difference. With your support, we can turn this symbolic gesture into lasting change.”

Homelessness in Australia is complex and growing. Many people face it due to financial hardship, mental health struggles, or escaping domestic violence — and more than 1 in 7 Australians experiencing homelessness are aged 55 or older.

The 2025 event marks the 20th anniversary of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, which has seen thousands of leaders participate since 2006, raising over $91 million nationally to support Australians in crisis.

“This is a moment for our industry to come together as a community and lead with compassion,” Barrie said.

“Together, we can make a powerful difference. Let’s stand, and sleep out, for change.”

  • AUSactive CEO Barrie Elvish Announces Retirement After Transformative Tenure

AUSactive CEO Barrie Elvish Announces Retirement After Transformative Tenure

AUSactive has announced the retirement of its Chief Executive Officer, Barrie Elvish, who has served the organisation with distinction since January 2019.

Initially joining as Interim CEO for six months to address significant challenges, Barrie’s leadership and vision quickly proved invaluable, resulting in a tenure that transformed AUSactive into the dynamic, forward-focused organisation it is today.

Upon his arrival, Barrie was met with declining revenues, disengaged membership, excessive overheads, and a breakdown in trust between the Board and staff.

With an unwavering commitment to transparency and collaboration, he rapidly assessed the situation, rebuilt confidence among stakeholders, and spearheaded the development of a renewed strategic direction.

Throughout his time at the helm, Barrie demonstrated exceptional leadership—fostering a strong relationship with the Board, empowering the AUSactive team, and reinforcing financial sustainability.

AUSactive Deputy Chair, Jayne Blake, said Barrie’s contributions would leave a lasting legacy.

“Barrie’s leadership has been nothing short of transformative. He brought clarity and stability during a time of uncertainty and positioned AUSactive as a powerful advocate for the industry,” Ms Blake said.

“His ability to unite stakeholders, inspire progress, and lead with integrity will be felt for many years to come. On behalf of the Board, we thank him deeply for his service and wish him every success in the next chapter of his journey.

“His influence extended beyond the organisation, strengthening connections both nationally and internationally while earning the respect and trust of industry leaders.”

A key milestone under Barrie’s leadership was his pivotal role in driving constitutional reform, ensuring all membership categories—including small businesses and AUSReps—were fully represented at the Board level.

He also led AUSactive’s advocacy efforts, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he became a vital bridge between the fitness industry and government. His tireless efforts helped secure recognition of gyms as essential services in Queensland, reinforcing the critical role of physical activity in public health and wellbeing.

Recognising the need for a future-focused approach post-COVID, Barrie guided the organisation in redefining its strategic direction to emphasise preventative health and advocate for both mental and physical wellbeing.

His leadership was also instrumental in the successful rebranding of Fitness Australia to AUSactive, marking a significant evolution in the organisation’s purpose and reach.Barrie Elvish

Barrie’s impact on advocacy has been profound, with AUSactive’s presence in Canberra stronger than ever. His ability to navigate political landscapes, build trust with federal and state governments, and elevate the profile of AUSactive has firmly positioned the organisation as a leading voice in the health and fitness sector.

Among his many achievements, securing NDIS provider status and fostering relationships with health insurers and the broader healthcare industry stand out as a testament to his strategic acumen.

Barrie’s leadership style—defined by decisiveness, eloquence, and authenticity—has been fundamental to AUSactive’s success. Known for his ability to articulate complex issues with clarity, his passion for the industry, and his unwavering integrity, he has set a high benchmark for leadership in the sector.

As Barrie steps down, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, innovation, and momentum. While his successor will undoubtedly have big shoes to fill, thanks to Barrie’s transformative leadership, AUSactive is well-positioned for continued growth and impact.

On behalf of the Board, staff, and members, AUSactive extends its deepest gratitude to Barrie for his outstanding service and contributions.
