#JTInTheRaw Show 5: Talking Cost of Inactivity, E-newsletters & People’s Attitudes.

We are up to show 5 today of #JTInTheRaw . . . and I have just finished a class called Afterburner down at 38X Fitness.  This business is owned by David & Paula Allen.  They are industry legends and DA is the current chairman of Fitness Australia.  I have been threatening to come down for years and today I made it!

It was a great class. Fun and I got into the yellow & red zone with my MYZONE belt.  But according to the website, its the science of EPOC training that now starts to kick in for me!

Special Thanks To . . .

Thanks to Rhys, Tristan, Matt, Caroline & Cindy for sharing last week’s show by tagging people in the comments below.  I am very grateful for the sharing, so again if you want to share then just tag anyone you think would benefit from watching #JTInTheRaw.

Thanks also to Anne, who is not from the fitness industry, and is doing her best to promote to #JTInTheRaw telling people what I share is relevant in any business!  Thanks Anne!

Ouch! Inactivity Is Expensive!

Yesterday, a study was released that said the global cost of physical inactivity for 2013 has been calculated at $A90 billion, in a world-first study by the University of Sydney.   The study included data from 142 countries, taking in 93.2 per cent of the global population.

In 2013, the total cost burden of physical inactivity on the Australian economy was $805 million, including $640 million in direct costs and $165 million in productivity losses.

And yet across the globe there are now more fitness offerings and products than ever before.  Something is not right?

I wonder when we can expect Bono & Bob Geldoff to do a modern day Band Aid rock concert not to help feed starving people but to save people from over eating and not moving enough?

This week I want to talk online email newsletters!

I am on the Northern Suburbs Rugby Club Board of Directors and in hot debate on what emails we should send to our database.  And I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments below.

Here are my views:

  1. Every business MUST have an email based newsletter.
  2. Your email newsletter must be sent consistently to your database, to the extent that your database can set their watch by when your newsletter arrives – day and time!
  3. If you have current customers or members, this newsletter MUST provide the GREATEST value.  There should be exclusive offers, exclusive education and information.  This adds a perceived value to the membership or being your customer.
  4. If you have leads they should receive an email that builds trust, you want to show them that you’re an expert! They may get a snippet of info that your members get BUT not the box and dice. They need to get teasers, so they can get a feel for the benefit of membership.
  5. Former members or customers they need to be reminded again and again of how good you are and more importantly when you have some thing new!

If you don’t have different newsletters then your non-members – prospects and former members – will see no value in becoming a member because they get the same good shit as members!  Or worse still, as we are finding out if they get the same newsletter as members they think they are still a member and so don’t renew.

Your email newsletter is a critical cog in your marketing wheel, get it right and the business will benefit!

I am back podcasting this week . . .

I listened to Jeb Blount’s Sales Gravy podcast this week.  Jeb was a double show guest on The Fitness Business Podcast and I have a man crush on him.  He’s great!

He explains what is needed to be a successful sales person in this week’s show on Sales Gravy.  He is fairly aggressive. He rips into whining and whingeing sales people.  Its a real kick arse for sales people’s attitudes.

My 3 takeaways were:

  • A message for all of us, “You are not defined by what happens to you but rather how you deal with what happens to you.”
  • When things don’t go your way you have choice – whine & complain OR learn & grow.  The choice is yours!
  • Grateful thinking and an expression of thanks to others is associated with increased levels of energy, optimism, motivation, happiness & empathy!  All the key attributes we need in out staff.  He said this lovely quote: ‘Be thankful you don’t have everything you desire.  If you did, what would you have to look forward to?”

What I have been doing this week . . .
