#JTInTheRaw Show 80 | Leadership Is Staying Calm & In Control

Do you realise every day hundreds of eyes are watching you and watching how you respond to adversity?  Those eyes are learning from you.  To be a leader we need to stay calm in trying circumstances.

We need to be an example of the behaviour we want from our team.  Today, we’re going to talk about leading by behaviour.

Welcome to #JTInTheRaw show 80 where I chew the thin on business – small business, large business, management of business and any industry business.  My goal is to making you think and do different in 2018 and today I’m focusing on you!

From Last Week

Last week in show 79 I shared a two-week challenge with you to be healthier, happier and more productive by being in control of your day.  I shared a 3-step challenge:

  1. Plan your next day before your go home;
  2. Block time out of your diary to do your tasks;
  3. Stick with that schedule the next day.

And follow this system for 14 days!

I was super excited to hear from Raw viewers this week who thanked me for sharing this challenge.  They are both doing the challenge and so are their teams.  This made me feel warm and fuzzy!

I will be speaking at IHRSA again this year.  I am doing two sessions:

Go to www.ihrsa.org and register.

I did an interview this week on www.FitnessBusinessPodcast.com on why, when and how to change your prices.  This show will be live later in February.

JT Rant

This week I was chatting with a coaching client asking me what and how could they deliver a health and wellness plan for 10 weeks for 140 people for 1000 bucks!

Are you kidding me?

1000 bucks for 10 weeks for 140 people – this company is prepared to spend 71 cents per employee per week on their company fitness program.  You cannot even buy a cup of coffee for this!

Now I understand that budgets are budgets but seriously companies do not insult your staff or degrade the value of their health by offering a pittance investment!  This is just tokenism or ticking a box.

If you want true professionals to come in and have an impact on your staff’s health then you have to pay!  You must understand that these people are professionals just like you and they deserve to be paid appropriately.

If you really want to help your staff, then invest in them.

I do think the fitness industry have themselves to blame:

  • We are blinded by the flashing lights of working with a company and make an emotional decision not a logical decision;
  • We are prepared to discount what we do to get a job – which could mean we are doing the job at a loss;
  • There is not unanimous support of the peak body and the registration system, so therefore companies don’t even know what to look for a quality control in knowledge.

The fitness industry needs better positioning as experts and professionals and companies you need to pay what you should for experts and companies.

Then together we can reduce the health care costs with healthier people.

Staying Grounded

Last weekend I confused my daughter.  She knew she was in trouble but I wasn’t raising my voice or changing my body language to project anger.  I stayed calm, didn’t get wound up and never lost control.

You see when you lead a sporting team, a department, a company or a family people are watching.  What you think, what you say, how you show up and what you look like all have a direct impact on the people you are leading.

How you respond will determine if they come to you with problems and want to discuss anything with you.

You will miss sales. Your team will make mistakes. Your kids will play up and push boundaries.  These are ALL inevitable.  How you respond shows your leadership.

For many of us at this time of year everything is going great! The last thing you expect is a curve ball.  But I guarantee one is coming.

You need to recognize that just a fleeting moment of frustration, anger or impatience will hurt your team’s morale.

As the leader you must project calmness, confidence, and competence, even if you feel stressed out.  Your Team will look to you for leadership, control and as an example on responding.

Two things to work on, while things are going great:

  • Build your self-awareness to sense when you are getting wound up – you want to develop your personal warning system; and
  • Think “how do I get back to this head space when things are tough?”  What can you do to stop yourself blowing your stack?  Find the answer now!

And why?

Well other than the negative impact on morale as I said, if you maintain a stable, grounded presence, you’ll increase the likelihood that your team will feel comfortable bringing you the important information you need.  They will not feel intimidated or scared.

Honesty will prosper in your company, department, sporting team or family. This has to be good for business and life!

Think and do different in your leadership!

This Week

Zoe returns to school on Tuesday which is exciting for our family! She enters year 4 with a new teacher and making new friends!

On Wednesday I am working with 3 Anytime Fitness clubs as we launch the year.  We’ll be focusing on developing synergy between personal goals and club goals.  This is 6-hour workshop which will set the foundation for conquering challenges this year.

On Friday, I have the NSW Personal Trainers Industry Leaders Roundtable.  We are dissecting how to run challenges and developing best business practices.

This meeting is in Wollongong, so tune in next week as I’ll be live from Wollongong!  Hopefully, the weather is fine and hot so I can show case our coastline for our northern hemisphere friends!

Quote of the Week

“As the leader you must project calmness, confidence, and competence. Your Team will see your actions as an example of how to respond.”

      Justin Tamsett OMG! 71c. per employee per week is an insult!!
      Here an example (positive) in regard of you rant 🙂 The company I work for has lots of issues in terms of leadership/management, but I can definitively say that it does something positive for the health/fitness of the employees.
      It has an agreement with the nearest gym: for every employee who wants to joint that gym, the company pays half of the membership and the employee pays the other half. The gym is at walk distance from the company, many people go together in their lunch break, and this is great because they motivate each other to “stay on track”. Another winning point is that in such way everyone does what he/she likes: classes, swim, weights etc. It is easier to stick with an habit if it involves doing what you like!
      (not to mention how beneficial this is also for the relationships at work among colleagues and teams/departments).
