Motionsoft Technology Summit | Supermarket Self Checkouts & Gyms

We often look to technology to reduce road blocks, improve efficiency or even decrease wages.  This was the agenda for the development of self-service kiosks in supermarkets.

The intriguing result has been that consumers have been turned off by this way of checking out!

Studies have shown there are consumers that will choose to line up, take longer to shop and then be served rather than do everything themselves.

Why?

They want that human interaction!  Some people just want to connect with a human – maybe the only human connection an older person has in a week.  That human interaction could be with others in line or even have a chat with the ‘checkout chick/bloke.’

The question for our businesses is do we have options for members who want to ‘self serve’ and members who want that human interaction.  We need to both to cater for both groups of people.
