If You Want Members Meet Their Needs

The modern consumer is very different to anyone we have had to sell, communicate with and retain in the history of business.  They are not any higher maintenance, they just have new needs to be met.  In this session, you’ll walk away with 7 consumer trends that are relevant for your business and ideas on what you can do to use these trends in your business.  You will see how other businesses have used these trends to grow customer numbers and loyalty.

Likeability Is The Key To Sales, Retention & Business Growth

In a world where we attempt to automate so much of the prospecting, sales and retaining of members with state of the technology, we seem to have forgotten the power of the personal touch.  In this session, you’ll learn the keys behaviours for people to ‘like’ you.  This is not about rapport, this about building a connection of trust.  When your prospect trusts you they will buy from you, train with you and stay with you.  Join JT as we revisit the power of people connection in your business.

  • Your Most Powerful Retention Tool

    Your Most Powerful Retention Tool

    group exercise

Group Exercise can be the most powerful tool in your toolkit or it can go horribly wrong. How do you turn it around and make it the best retention tool you have?

    Here are 3 quick tips;

    1. Firstly you need to recognise that Group Ex is your strongest weapon against members jumping ship like lemmings. The tribal culture that is built in group fitness classes creates a team of people who hold each other accountable and have a shared experience.
    1. Secondly invest in instructors who can build that tribe with great member connection skills and a wow factor on stage – this keeps people coming back for more. Positive emotional energy is contagious and in Group Exercise classes this works strongly in your favour.
    1. Thirdly host good quality events which members can get involved in, socialise at and bring friends and family too. Give them loads of photo opportunities because when they have fun and feel proud of what they have achieved, they will promote your classes and your facility better than any marketing department could. Let them tell their own stories.
  • Getting Comfy

    Getting Comfy

We need to make our members more comfortable in our fitness centres. Senior with female PT

What we know from current industry research is that the number one reason members leave, is not because it’s too expensive, not because they don’t have enough time but because they don’t feel comfortable in our clubs and fitness centres.

What could we do to make new members more comfortable when they come to a club?

What could we do to create spaces where women are comfortable in the gym?

How can we incorporate seniors into our fitness centres so they are in space and training in a way that suits them?

Service of our customers is more important than ever as people have a lot of choice of the types of places they can train, the amounts of money they can pay and many sorts of classes/forms of training they can do.

Here are a few tips and things you can do:

    1. Invest in staff training for great member connection
    2. Create and use a needs analysis for new members
    3. Continue to monitor how members feel and take action on that feedback
  • Should we give our members what they want or what they need?

Should we give our members what they want or what they need?

    members, pilates

Many of us as owners, managers or program coordinators have considerable control over what forms of exercise are offered in our fitness facilities. Is it our job to simply identify our demographic and offer them what they want or do we have a more important role than that?

As informed industry professionals should we be guiding members into forms of exercise and ways of exercising that we know to be most beneficial to them?

    • Who is the judge of what they need? Us or them?
    • How do we determine that?
    • How do we guide and encourage them to do what we, as fitness industry professionals know will be of benefit to them?

I would argue that we need to be more proactive in our choices about exercise options for members. We need to educate them more on the benefits of particular exercises and particular ways of exercising e.g. Tabata, as an alternative to steady state training, Pilates instead of traditional core training exercises.

What a great challenge it would be for 2016 to present as many fresh new inspiring forms of exercise as we can to our members, in order to keep them inspired and excited about exercising regularly. In turn this keeps them in our clubs, builds member loyalty and satisfaction, and increases our member retention.

  • Does Criticism Help?

    Does Criticism Help?

    Confused Lady Looking up

To be creative, innovative & solve problems then we need to be able to accept constructive criticism. Leaders need to accept this feedback and also seek it out.

Don’t just be open to and ask for the general feedback, ask your Team, members and stakeholders to poke holes in your ideas and approaches to challenges.

A constructive critique will be an awesome method to test ideas and help have the Team buy in to your ideas.

  • How To Piss Your Spin Members Off Easily!

How To Piss Your Spin Members Off Easily!

Let me say this straight off the bat, I am NOT a spin instructor or a regular spin class attendee.

In fact, I would suggest on the paradigm I am closer to never spin than regular!

Today, I was in the spin room, at the gym I go to, prior to the class for about 20 minutes, just turning my legs over – that makes me sound such a professional!!! Anyway, as the participants came in here is what I noticed:

    1. They all stared me down for being ‘perhaps’ on their bike – how dare I!
    2. They all set themselves up on the back 2 rows of the studio. With only 4 minutes before the class started there were 10 people in the studio: 1 person in the front row; 1 person in row 3 right against the wall; and 8 people with at least 1 bike between them in the back 2 rows.

I really felt for today’s instructor, the front 6 rows of bikes – probably close to 24 bikes with no-one in them!

Why not make a new rule in 2016: Fill the bikes from the front and ride next to someone!

    cycle rules

I know this will really piss off some of your members but from my limited experience when I have done a class there is SO much energy generated by not just the bikes close together but the people.

It is like a true peloton!

And how much better will the instructor ‘entertain’ or ‘perform’ when they look out and see faces – faces close to them.

Do you have the #STRENGTH to make this change, to make your cycle classes #STRONGER?

Top Tips From Christine Thalwitz On The Fitness Business Podcast

Here is what resonated for me on this weeks podcast from Christine Thalwitz:

No one should be anonymous in your facility – Christine Thalwitz

Before embarking on a charity campaign, ensure the campaign part of your company’s core values. Does it resonate with your audience, is there an organic tie in? – Christine Thalwitz

    And Christine’s top tips are:

    • It’s important to see the gym through our customers eyes, take the time to understand what are their fears when first considering joining a gym.
    • Take every aspect into account, from bathrooms to bath towels, layout to music and website design its essential to truly understand what your customer wants – build the club from outside in.
    • Before embarking on a charity campaign, ensure the campaign part of your company’s core values. Does it resonate with your audience, is there an organic tie in?
    • Consider, is this partnership going to stand out in your marketplace? Make sure you pick a great partner, a great charity, tell stories, get actively involved in the charity you are supporting (Christine gave the great examples of staff volunteering in kids book readings and helping out at the local food bank).
